Coaxial Cable Loss & Power Rating Chart
Coaxial Cable Attenuation & Power Handling Chart
Essential technical reference for RF engineers and telecommunications professionals.
Overview
In any RF system, the coaxial cable is a passive component that introduces signal loss (Attenuation) and has physical limits on how much energy it can transmit (Power Handling). Choosing the right cable ensures optimal signal integrity and prevents hardware damage.
Attenuation & Power Comparison Table
Values shown are typical attenuation (dB per 100ft) and Average Power Rating (Watts) at 25°C (77°F) at sea level.
| Cable Type | O.D. (mm) | 150 MHz (dB) | 900 MHz (dB) | 2400 MHz (dB) | 5800 MHz (dB) | Max Power (900MHz) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG174 | 2.80 | 8.4 | 21.0 | 36.5 | 61.2 | 40 W |
| RG316 | 2.50 | 7.5 | 18.5 | 31.0 | 54.0 | 85 W |
| RG58 | 4.95 | 4.1 | 11.2 | 21.5 | 42.0 | 150 W |
| LMR195 | 4.95 | 3.9 | 9.9 | 18.1 | 28.5 | 250 W |
| LMR200 | 4.95 | 3.4 | 8.8 | 15.6 | 24.2 | 310 W |

Technical Insights
Attenuation vs. Frequency
Loss increases as frequency rises. This is caused by Dielectric Loss (energy absorbed by insulation) and Conductor Loss (Skin Effect). For 5G and Wi-Fi 6 applications, low-loss cables like LMR series are recommended for runs over 3 meters.
Power Handling & Derating
A cable's power rating is limited by heat. High VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) creates hot spots that can melt the dielectric. Always derate the power capacity when operating in high-temperature or high-altitude environments.
Expert Selection Tips
- Flexible Jumpers: For internal device wiring or short pigtails (< 1m), RG174 or RG316 offer excellent flexibility with manageable loss.
- Long Runs: For external 4G/5G antennas or base stations, LMR400 is the industry standard to minimize signal drop.
- Harsh Environments: Choose cables with PE (Polyethylene) jackets for UV resistance in outdoor installations.
