RF Terminology A–Z
A quick-reference glossary of radio frequency and antenna terms used in technical specifications and product documentation.
A
A high-purity (99%+) cleaning agent used to remove oils and dust from precision RF interfaces without leaving residue.
The reduction in signal power (measured in dB) as it travels through a cable. It increases with cable length and signal frequency.
B
The range of frequencies over which an antenna or system operates within acceptable performance limits (typically defined by VSWR < 2:1).
A signal processing technique used in antenna arrays to focus a wireless signal specifically toward a target mobile device.
The smallest radius a cable can be bent without causing permanent internal damage or signal reflection (Return Loss).
Bayonet Neill–Concelman connector. A quick-connect RF connector commonly used on handheld radios, scanners, and test equipment. Rated to ~4 GHz.
A woven mesh of fine wires used as the outer conductor to provide flexibility and high-coverage shielding.
A specific connector design with a mounting nut and washer, allowing it to be fixed through a hole in a chassis or panel.
C
The core wire (usually Solid Copper or Copper-Clad Steel) that carries the actual RF signal.
A transmission line consisting of a center conductor surrounded by a dielectric, a shield, and an outer jacket, all sharing a single geometric axis.
The threaded part of a male connector that rotates to lock the connection securely to the female interface.
A mechanical termination method where a sleeve is compressed onto a cable using a specialized tool for high-speed assembly.
D
Decibels relative to an isotropic radiator. Measures antenna gain compared to a theoretical antenna that radiates equally in all directions. Higher dBi = more focused beam.
Decibels relative to a half-wave dipole antenna. 0 dBd = 2.15 dBi. Used as an alternative gain reference in some antenna specifications.
An insulating material (typically PTFE/Teflon) that separates the center conductor from the outer shell to maintain impedance.
A basic antenna consisting of two conductive elements. The standard reference antenna for gain measurements (0 dBd). Commonly used in base station and portable radio applications.
An antenna designed to focus its energy into a narrow beam, providing significantly greater range in one specific direction.
An antenna's capability to operate on two distinct frequency ranges (typically 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) simultaneously.
A protective cover used to keep unused ports clean and free of contaminants that could ruin the signal interface.
E
Unwanted electromagnetic energy that disrupts the performance of electronic equipment. Proper shielding and grounding are essential to minimize EMI in RF systems.
F
The coaxial cable connecting a radio transceiver to the antenna. Signal loss in the feedline directly reduces effective radiated power.
A connector type characterized by a center receptacle (hole) and external threads. It is designed to receive a male plug.
A connector base with four screw holes used for stable and permanent mounting on equipment enclosures.
A thin layer of aluminum or copper tape used to provide 100% coverage against high-frequency interference.
The number of oscillations per second of an electromagnetic wave, measured in Hertz (Hz). Common RF bands: VHF (136–174 MHz), UHF (400–520 MHz), 2.4 GHz (WiFi/Bluetooth).
The specific range of frequencies over which an antenna can operate while maintaining an acceptable VSWR.
The elliptical-shaped volume between two antennas that must be kept clear of obstacles to ensure a strong, reliable signal link.
In directional antennas, the ratio of power radiated in the desired direction to the power radiated in the opposite direction.
G
A measure of an antenna's ability to direct or focus RF energy in a specific direction relative to an isotropic radiator.
A rubber seal located at the interface to prevent moisture and dust from entering the connection point.
A thin layer of gold applied to contacts to ensure maximum conductivity and provide permanent resistance to oxidation and corrosion.
A flat metal surface (or a vehicle roof) used as a reflective base to enhance the radiation characteristics of certain antenna types.
H
An antenna with a radiating element equal to half the wavelength of the target frequency. Does not require a ground plane, making it suitable for non-metal mounting surfaces.
I
The specific electrical resistance to alternating current. 50 Ohms is the global standard for RF and wireless power transmission.
The total amount of signal power lost when a component (like a connector or adapter) is inserted into a system.
A standard for ingress protection indicating the device is Dust-Tight and can withstand Water Immersion (1 meter for 30 minutes).
K
A precision RF connector with a 2.92mm interface, rated for use up to 40 GHz. Commonly used in millimeter-wave test equipment and high-frequency measurement systems. Mechanically compatible with SMA and 3.5mm connectors.
L
The outermost protective layer of a cable. PE is for outdoor/UV resistance; PVC is for indoor flexibility.
A brand of low-loss coaxial cable (e.g., LMR-200, LMR-400) widely used in professional RF installations. Offers significantly lower attenuation than standard RG cables.
A technical classification for cables designed with foam dielectrics and superior shielding to minimize signal decay (e.g., LMR-200, LMR-400).
A material used for cable jackets that emits no toxic fumes when burned, required for indoor public safety compliance.
M
A connector type characterized by a protruding center pin and internal threads. It is designed to be inserted into a female jack.
The rated durability of a connector, indicating how many times it can be plugged and unplugged (typically 500–1,000 cycles depending on connector type) before performance degrades.
A technology using multiple antennas at both the source and destination to improve communication performance and speed.
Power lost due to impedance mismatch between the antenna and feedline. Expressed in dB. Directly related to VSWR — a VSWR of 2:1 results in approximately 0.51 dB mismatch loss.
A single-element antenna that uses a ground plane as its second element. Common in mobile vehicle-mounted antennas.

A threaded RF connector rated for use up to 11 GHz. Commonly used in high-power and high-frequency base station antennas and professional repeater systems.
O
A radiation pattern that propagates signals uniformly in 360 degrees on the horizontal plane, ideal for multi-room coverage.
P
A treatment applied to stainless steel connectors to enhance corrosion resistance and surface durability.
The innermost conductive element of a connector, usually gold-plated, responsible for the primary signal transmission.
A common RF connector used on HF, VHF, and UHF mobile transceivers. Despite the "UHF" name, it is most effective below 300 MHz. Used by Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu radios.
The orientation of the electric field of the electromagnetic wave. Maximum signal is achieved when transmitter and receiver polarizations match.
Q
An antenna with a radiating element equal to one quarter of the target wavelength. Requires a ground plane to function correctly. Widely used in mobile and vehicle-mounted applications.
R
A specialized plastic or fiberglass enclosure that protects the antenna elements from weather without blocking RF waves.
A measure (in dB) of how much signal power is reflected back toward the source due to impedance mismatch. A higher return loss value indicates a better impedance match. >14 dB corresponds to VSWR < 1.5:1.
A family of coaxial cable standards (RG58, RG174, RG6, etc.). "RG" stands for Radio Guide. Different RG types have different impedances, diameters, and loss characteristics.
A variation where the center contact is swapped (Pin becomes Hole, Hole becomes Pin) to prevent end-users from connecting unauthorized high-gain antennas in compliance with FCC regulations.
S
The outer metal housing (usually brass or stainless steel) that provides mechanical support, grounding, and EMI shielding.
The ability of a cable's outer conductor (braid/foil) to block external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and prevent signal leakage.
SubMiniature version A connector. A small threaded RF connector rated to 18 GHz. Widely used on modern handheld radios (Baofeng, Anytone) and WiFi/cellular antennas. Note: SMA Male and SMA Female refer to the center pin, not the thread.
A thermal termination method where conductors are fused using a lead/tin alloy for the most robust electrical connection.
Standing Wave Ratio / Voltage Standing Wave Ratio. Measures the efficiency of power transfer from the feedline to the antenna. Ideal VSWR is 1:1. Values above 3:1 can damage radio equipment.
T
A 50-Ohm device used to "close" an unused RF port, preventing signal reflection and protecting equipment from damage.
Threaded Neill–Concelman connector. A threaded version of the BNC connector, offering better performance at higher frequencies and in vibration-prone environments.
A precision tool used to tighten connectors to a specific force, ensuring a perfect seal without damaging the threads.
U
The ability of a cable jacket or antenna radome to withstand prolonged exposure to direct sunlight without cracking or degrading.
V
The speed at which a signal travels through a cable relative to the speed of light, typically expressed as a percentage (e.g., 80%).
The radio frequency range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. Common VHF band for mobile/ham radio: 136–174 MHz. VHF signals travel farther in open terrain but are blocked more easily by buildings.
A measure of how much power is reflected back toward the source. A lower ratio (e.g., <1.5) indicates a highly efficient system. Ideal VSWR is 1:1. Values above 3:1 can damage radio equipment.
W
The physical length of one complete cycle of a radio wave. Calculated as: λ = c / f (speed of light ÷ frequency). Antenna element lengths are typically fractions of the wavelength (¼, ½, ⅝).
X
The radio frequency range from 8 GHz to 12 GHz. Widely used in radar systems, satellite communications, and military applications due to its ability to provide high resolution and reliable performance in adverse weather conditions.
